Sasan Ghahreman is an Iranian-Canadian novelist, journalist, actor and director, and social-documentary photographer. Born in 1961 in Iran, he studied Performing Arts at the University of Tehran and performed in 25 plays and directed 5, plus writing a collection of short stories and a number of plays and screen-plays before moving to Canada in 1984. Years later, he continued his academic education in English Literature and Sociology at the York University in Toronto.
During the last three decades Ghahreman has published 4 novels, a number of short stories, 2 plays, a collection of critical articles, a Textbook on Farsi Language and Literature, and 3 selection of poems. His first and 2nd novels, Gossal (1995-2016) and Cafe Renaissance (1997-2016) have been praised by numerous Iranian critics around the world and reprinted several times due to the public demand. He has also directed and performed in numerous plays, a number of Shorts, and three feature films by the Iranian film makers residing in Canada.
Ghahreman has been executive director and chief editor of a socio-cultural magazine, Sepeedar (1992-95) and a bi-lingual monthly Web-zine, Gozaar (2006-09). He was one of the funders and twice board member of the Association of the Iranian Writers in Canada (1996-99) and alternative board member of the Association of the Iranian Writers in Exhile (1999-2001). He is the founder of Afra Publishing, the first Iranian publishing house in Canada (since 1995) and Cafe Renaissance Academy for Alternative Art and Literature in which he has been coaching Creative Writing workshops since 2011.
Ghahreman has also been practicing photography (Social-documentary/Street) since 2012 and some of his photos have been published in the World Street Photography Year Book in 2014 and 2015. He has participated in several exhibitions including Istanbul International Photo Exhibition (2014), a solo exhibition at the Arta Gallery (2017), and Toronto’s International Contact Photography Festival (2015 and 2018).
