Changing Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality within the Iranian and Farsi Speaking Diaspora In 2015, IWOO’s application for Ontario Trillium Foundation funding on a project titled Changing Perspectives on Gender and Sexuality within the Iranian and Farsi Speaking Diaspora was accepted. This project aims to address the issue of gender and sexual identity through education and discussions about youth LGBTQI (Lesbian/Gay/Trans/Queer/Intersex) identities within the Iranian and other Farsi speaking communities in the GTA. For people living with LGBTQI identities in the diaspora, it can be difficult to live openly as they run the risk of being ostracized by family, and the community at large. As such, IWOO felt that given its position in the community, and commitment to an anti-oppressive framework, it would be able to work toward filling the existing gap in the community in service provision for LGBTQI youth. This project aims to work toward engaging both Iranian and other Farsi speaking youth and the larger Toronto community around issues of gender and sexual identity. Through community activities, peer-led workshops, art exhibitions, film screenings, and LGBTQI community forums, IWOO hopes to develop an inclusive and safe space for LGBTQI youth to engage in. As well, through this project, we hope to cultivate a sense of community, and an understanding that topics of LGBTQI are not disconnected from other social categories, and affect all of us, in one way or another.
